What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics contain bacteria that can help support your gut health. When taken in the right amounts, they may provide health benefits by helping balance the bacteria in your digestive system. These bacteria are similar to the helpful microbes that naturally live in your gut.

How Do Probiotics Work?

Probiotics can help your gut in several ways. They can strengthen the lining of the intestines, help block harmful germs from growing, produce substances that fight bad bacteria, and help regulate the immune system to support overall digestive health.

When Should I Consider Taking Probiotics?

You might consider probiotics in a few common situations:

  • While taking antibiotics: Probiotics may help lower the risk of diarrhea caused by antibiotics and may help prevent certain infections, such as Clostridium difficile
  • If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Certain probiotic strains may help improve IBS symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and irregular bowel movements
  • For general gut support: Some people choose probiotics for digestive balance, particularly during times of stress, illness, or dietary changes, although benefits in otherwise healthy individuals are less clearly established

It is important to know that probiotics are not universally beneficial. While certain strains may help in specific situations, many probiotics have limited evidence, and benefits are not consistent across all products or individuals.

It is also important to understand that not all probiotics work the same way, and different strains can have very different effects depending on the condition being treated. It is always a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider before starting a probiotic.

Are Probiotics Safe?

Probiotics are generally safe for most people. However, they may not be appropriate for everyone. People with weakened immune systems, serious medical conditions, or severe illness should use caution, as there may be a higher risk of complications. In these cases, probiotics should only be used under medical guidance.

Can probiotics cause side effects?

Most people tolerate probiotics well. Mild side effects, such as gas or bloating, can occur, especially when first starting, and usually improve over time.

Are probiotics the same as prebiotics?

No. Probiotics are live “good” bacteria, while prebiotics are types of fiber that feed the beneficial bacteria already present in your gut. Some products contain both.

How Do I Choose the Right Probiotic?

Probiotics are not one-size-fits-all. Different probiotics help with different conditions, so it is best to choose one that has been studied for your specific symptoms or condition.

When shopping for a probiotic:

  • Look for products that clearly list the types of bacteria (strains) they contain
  • Check the dose per serving
  • Choose products supported by clinical research when possible

It is also important to know that probiotics are considered dietary supplements and are not tightly regulated, so product quality and contents may vary.

Because it can be confusing, your gastroenterologist can help guide you toward a probiotic that makes sense for your specific symptoms and overall health.
